When you think of SEO, do you think of content marketing? You should.
Matt Cutts, head of Google's web spam team has repeatedly said that quality content is key to Google rankings, and Bing's Duane Forrester reminded marketers that "all SEO ranking signals revolve around content of some kind." High-quality, search-friendly content allows businesses to populate their sites with keywords and valuable information for visitors (and both are important to search success).
Brafton's infographic, Why Content For SEO, explores how content is key to search engine visibility. Engaging content such as video dramatically affects your site traffic. It's time to think about what kind of content you have online and combining that with a social media strategy.
After borrowing our FPV cameras for the past year, we have now acquired our very own GoPro Hero 3+ Black Edition camera with Remote Control and iPhone monitoring. Now Day One Media is ready for action and creative point-of-view shots on short notice, day or night. If you haven't already seen the amazing capabilities of these cameras, watch this video below! Many of the action clips in this video used this camera.
For commercial applications, these cameras are great for getting into tight spots or anywhere our big cameras are not well suited. The HERO3+ Black Edition captures gorgeous 12MP stills at up to 30 frames per second—perfect for fast-action sequences. Time Lapse mode enables automatic photo capture at 0.5, 1, 2, 5, 10, 30 or 60 second intervals. Continuous Photo shoots full-resolution stills at a steady 3, 5 or 10 frames per second. Some shot ideas include attaching to a tool or a work helmet, in an industrial shop, up high outdoors, on a pole or tower, attached to the side of a truck, underwater, and almost anywhere else you can imagine! If you've been considering a creative video for your business, now is the time for us to create something eye-popping for your website.
When it came to choosing our office, there was definitely a gamble involved. It's always risky to have a pricey large space that isn't being used full-time in downtown. We've been here for a month and our studio is kicking into gear. We've been doing great explainer videos on green screen for business owners helping them tell their story in a simple authentic way. These videos are fast, budget-conscious and personal. Call us to have your own.
The producers of Solar Hero 2, a documentary film about the aboriginal housing crisis, used Day One Media's services to shoot original footage on native reserves in Alberta. We filmed at several reserves in southern Alberta shooting the states of aboriginal housing and interviewing residents. The film is now released:
Last weekend we were able to help our friends at Simpler Search Productions with a video camera rental. Well we can't call it a rental, cause we didn't charge them. We figure what goes around comes around. And we love to support indie films. SSP's latest project is Carless in Calgary, a documentary about what it would be like to give up your car for a week. Check it out at https://www.facebook.com/CarLessInCalgaryMovie
Our video team member Sheila Nykwist produced this documentary about Bharath Samrat, a man facing extraordinary challenges and how he is overcoming them. Sheila is now climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro filming the next segment of this story!
What do you think of the Sochi logo? In general, we aim for simple around here. Is this logo too simple? Does it need a graphic? This article shows an alternate version on the left below that was never approved. What do you prefer?

Here's more stuff we love, this time from Portland, Oregon. Last year Funnelbox hired Day One Media's consulting services to teach their team about best practices for improving their stock footage. I had the opportunity to tour their impressive 3 storey studio as well as see some of their great work. Portland is a great city too with lots of fun riverfront culture and a great hipster vibe. Here's their work from 2013:
There's a lot of talented and creative people out there, many who inspire us. We'll be posting these inspirational works regularly. Here's a great video with simple and strong animation and drawings. It's a great way to tell a story. If this appeals to you, call us to start building something beautiful like this to tell your story:
Now that the dust has settled on the new iPhone 5c's, we can get a better picture on the success of this product. And it appears by all calculations that it is another landslide victory for Apple. Who are these buyers? Sure, adding the massive China market skews the numbers, but there are still droves of people with current smartphones who upgraded. I have been trying to understand the appeal of this upgrade. There are some speed improvements, a cleaner interface and some other minor changes. Then there is the big selling feature: colour. Was it just me or did we all underestimate how the choice of colour could motivate so many people to buy? Or could it simply be the power of the brand? Do people inherently trust Apple's brand to the point that anything they produce is worthy of their ownership? There, of course, could be many more reasons but I want to highlight both of these views. Here's two quick points I learned here:
• Don't estimate the power of style and design. Make your product look and work great. Details matter. Colour matters.
• Keep strengthening your brand. Make it simple, strong and well-designed. Then get your name out there. And don't stop innovating.
A Calgary client hired us to shoot aerial footage based on a character referral. They had never seen our work! That's what I call faith.
There was a lot at stake with this shoot: The right weather, the props and the model, the remote location ad not the least, the pricey helicopter rental. We loaded up the car with all of our heavy equipment. We brought 5 cameras and and a ton of hardware. Not having met the client, we didn't know for sure what we were dealing with.
By 1pm we were in the helicopter capturing footage and photography of the area. After a long hard day near Golden, BC, we were rewarded with some spectacular footage of the Columbia River Valley. We systemically delivered all the shots the client required.
This project affirms our commitment to our clients - that we will do everything necessary to complete the job and deliver an outstanding product. It also attests to the power of the customer to create customers. Word of mouth trumps advertising.

This weekend is Young Life's IronBike event. This charity ride raises funds and awareness to care for struggling teenagers in Calgary. I have been volunteering on the committee for this event for the past 2 years. This year has certainly been a faith experience: the route for the ride, highway 40 over the Highwood Pass, was closed up until only a few days ago, due to the recent Alberta flooding.
The event is a 150km, one-day cycling event in the spectacular Kananaskis, sponsored by and starting at the Delta Kananaskis Lodge. What's exciting this year is that it is happening simultaneously with the Tour of Alberta, one of the biggest cycling events in Canada, which ends in downtown Calgary on Sunday, Sept. 8th.
I have cycled in the IronBike the past 2 years raising funds for Young Life. The experience has been one of the most memorable in my life. This year I will be on the support crew as the official photographer and videographer.
Participating in these endurance events reminds me of an important lesson in my professional life. When we focus our mental and physical energies, and commit to staying the course, we almost always achieve something great. Its about stretching our brains and our hearts. Its about moving with direction and purpose. Its affixing our eyes on the target, with the goal in sight and the reward to come. Whenever I have done this I have achieved spectacular results. For me and my clients, this is a win-win situation. I grow personally in significant ways and they gain a powerful creative product.
My family and I just completed a 2 and a half week road trip in a VW Westfalia in Montana, Idaho and Washington. The trip began with a 3 day canoe trip on the Milk River ending with a day exploring Writing-On-Stone Provincial Park. This adventure overwhelmed the senses with surreal landscapes, wildlife, including rattlesnakes and holding bull snakes and lots of fine company with 10 other families. Next up was exploring the spectacular Glacier National Park and the Road to the Sun up to Logan's Pass where we witnessed walls of snow 15 ft. high and numerous waterfalls, and wild animals. Next was the beautiful lake city of Coeur D' Alene where we had plenty of water time, swimming, cliff jumping, beaching, and biking. We also had a waterfront camping spot! We moved onto Riverside State Park in Spokane biking on the newly created Centennial Trail. This spectacular bicycle path runs from Montana to Idaho and is a cyclist's dream. Swimming in the frigid Columbia River on a hot day awakened the senses. There was plenty of gorgeous scenery to soak up here. A quick visit to Trader's Joe's for some great deals on organic food and we were off to Wenatchee. With loads of orchards, Mexican restaurants and a charming main street, we strolled and biked to our heart's delight enjoying delicious yellow cherries, and authentic carne asada tacos. Next stop, Leavenworth: a little German town full of traditional houses and even an accordion playing yodeller. Here, we stocked up on sausage and cheese and enjoyed some riverside camping. Our last stop was Oroville on Osoyoos Lake for some warm water beaching.
Trips like these never fail to rejuvenate my creative mind and refresh my whole body. Exploring new places, and meeting new people gives me a greater understanding of our world. This inevitably leads to new ways for me to serve my clients better.
Day One Media in support of Young Life Calgary, donated two framed photographic works for the Art Auction Fundraiser at the stylish Fluevog shoe store and lounge on Stephen Avenue on June 13, 2013. The evening was catered by Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel and wine pairings by sommelier Eric Southward from The Wine Shop in Mount Royal. John Fluevog also donated half of all profits from shoe sales that evening to the charity. It was a grand time! Young Life raised over $10,000 that evening. We look forward to contributing again and sending our entire team next year!
